Q&A
Tell me a little bit about your writing inspirations and/or how you got started.
I’ve been writing since I was little. I’ve always had a very creative mind (according to my parents). They said I would always find a way to have an outlet, whether through creating scenarios with my favorite toys or with drawings and scribbles, until those became words and formed full stories. I started sharing my stories with friends and my relatives and loved the reception (cue the people-pleaser in me), so I decided to continue on this path as a hobby because I not only loved being told I was doing something amazing, but because it felt like it too! Writing has always been an emotional endeavor for me. It’s truly liberating create a universe and have fun with the emotions, the trials and tribulations as we do in real life. And of course, get that happily ever after.
Can you explain your journey of being a self-published author? Are there any tips you would give an aspiring writer you wants to self-publish?
I started off sharing my stories since I was young, as aforementioned, but it wasn’t until I started uploading them online that they were exposed to a larger audience (which was honestly the highlight of my teenage years). I had a lot of people looking forward to the characters I created and what would happened next. Looking back, that was honestly insane because little old me was brave as hell for that. After a couple years, this led me to giving my old self that kind of “justice” she deserved by deciding to actually have her stories be in people’s hands–a tangible version. So, I decided to self-publish. I also dealt with a lot of plagiarism issues, my books being printed from online without my consent, and many other factors that made me decide I had to officially ensure these books were mine and mine only.
How do you handle writer’s block or periods of low creativity? Are there any specific strategies you use to get back on track?
Thankfully, I haven’t dealt with writer’s block yet (and hopefully never haha). I tend to be an overthinker and this becomes a positive when writing because I always have sort of an idea bank available with different ways to approach my plots.
Could you share some insights into your writing process? Do you have any rituals or habits that help you stay productive and creative?
I don’t have any “set” or “standard” way of writing. I oftentimes make use of my notes app though (this is where the real magic happens). I’ll jot down an idea or dialogue when it comes to mind before I forget. It can be a pain in the ass though when trying to fall asleep and this happens. I also organize my plots, stakes and characters through Word/Docs. I’ll decide their characteristics through what I love to call my “character breakdown”. Here, I make a rough draft of whether or not they have brown/blue eyes, their family background, their hobbies, their likes/dislikes, etc.
But I also always say, in order to be a writer, you have to be a reader first.
What advice would you give to new writers?
Remember why you’re writing in the first place. Writing should be for you. The moment it becomes something else, you should keep repeating this mantra. Also, please don’t compare yourself to other authors. We all have very different definitions of success. Your fellow authors are your colleagues (and/or your friends), not your competitors.
What future projects or ideas are you excited about? Can you give us a sneak peek into what you’re working on next?
I have a lot of exciting projects drafted! I have so many that they even span outside of the contemporary romance genre into the fantasy one. The one I’m most excited about though is a sports romance series. It’s a sport that’s not so popular in being written about, and I’ve had it in the bag for years now. Funnily enough, it was supposed to be my debut series, but I wanted to give it the justice it deserved because it’s so personal to me. Look out for it by the end of next year!
